As Seen in European Tool & Mould Making News…

Roehr’s new Dove Tail Collapsible Core was recently featured in the special EuroMold issue of European Tool & Mouldmaking News. In fact, not only was the DT Core featured inside, but the new, standardized Dove Tail Core, released by Progressive Components, made its debut on the cover of the popular magazine, too.

The team at Roehr are often called upon to assist a designer with a project that seems nearly impossible to engineer, and yet collapsible core technology provides the solution.

One such case recently came from A-1 Tool. The company was awarded a mold build involving four inserts with different threads that had to have the ability to be interchanged while the mold remained in the press.

It was quickly apparent that traditional unscrewing methods would never work. A-1’s president, Geoff Luther, and Alfonso Arciniegas, Project Manager, contacted Roehr for a possible solution and found the new DT Series cores to be the perfect solution.

“Not only were we faced with three different types of threads, but also different sizes,” explained Arciniegas. “We’re talking a 2-inch buttressed opening and a vent opening with a large pitch. Traditional unscrewing would never have worked, but the DT Core made it possible by simplifying the tool design, and it saved our customer money on the tool build.”

“We built a tool for our customer that’s easier to run and it saved us from having to work with different sizes and types of threads in a tool that would have been impossible to run using a traditional unscrewing configuration,” said Luther. “We were impressed that we were able to pull a much deeper undercut compared to other, more traditional styles of collapsing cores. Plus, having cooling capability in them was great. We were happy to see how well they cooled at the transfer to the individual segments. We were very impressed with the technical support and the finished product, and have already talked with other customers looking to do similar projects. We’ll be looking at using the DT Cores again.”

Roehr’s standard Minicores®, which are designed to mold very small parts, are offered in three sizes, the smallest of which is the CCM-0001. This Minicore is designed to mold caps from 16mm to as small as 12mm. The smallest undercut diameter that can be applied to the tiny standard component is 10.80mm.

“We have made custom Minicores that have an even smaller diameter of 9mm,” says Roehr’s Vice President Jim Cullison. “As with the whole Minicore line, this is an interrupted undercut.”
