Roehr Announces New Expansion

Roehr’s expertise in Collapsible Core technology was established in 1968, and there have been many chapters of growth. After joining the PCIC group in 2006, Roehr has once again expanded and recently ‘cut the ribbon’ for a new, larger facility in Hudson, MA.

"This move has allowed us to reorganize our shop workflow and gain efficiencies," said Jim Cullison, Roehr’s vice president.

Some key improvements include an over-
hauled inventory management system to help cut delivery times. In addition, new CNC lathe capabilities were added, and engineering
staff and workstations have been installed
to accommodate growth.

"In a global market we have to be competitive
and continue to invest in new equipment and
technology," explained Jim.

Dovetail Core: New Solution

Roehr Tool recently built two of its new Dovetail Cores, complete with thread-ground molding details, for Pilgrim Innovative Plastics in Plymouth, MA. The cores were needed for molding a very large, intricate threaded part used in the food processing industry. In addition, the part design required that the cores be installed on the A half of the mold base and space was a factor due to molding machine platen limits.

Joel Nickerson, president of Pilgrim, is a long-time advocate of Collapsible Core technology and paid a visit to explore his options. It was determined that the traditional RT Series core was too long for A half mounting, so Roehr introduced him to their new patent pending Collapsible Core. Dovetail Cores are very compact and do not require the use of a front half ejector box like other styles would.

While Mold Makers, Inc. in West Bridgewater, MA, were busy building and assembling the required mold base, cavities and side actions, Roehr concurrently constructed the Dovetail Cores and, upon delivery, Roehr’s senior applications engineer, Dave Helenius, was on hand to oversee the installation. Upon sampling the mold, production is running smoothly and the customer is happy with this new approach, reports Dave.

Roehr has been manufacturing custom Expandable Cavities since the early 1990’s, made available not only directly, but also through its distributors
D-M-E Company and Progressive Components.

Now, standardized Ex-Cavs have been developed and released, helping moldbuilders to meet shortened lead times.

The Ex-Cav standard includes two mounting styles, with CAD geometry available for ease of integration into upcoming mold designs. Ex-Cav’s can be or-dered with molding details already machined, and custom Ex-Cav’s requiring special configurations are also able
to be provided.
